The James River is perhaps one of Virginia’s most iconic landmarks. Not only is it a natural treasure, but it’s also brimming with history. For proof of this, look no further than Virginia State Route 5, a historic route that follows the James River, connecting the cities of Richmond and Williamsburg. Whether you enjoy day trips or are simply looking for a scenic, meandering drive, you’ll be glad you made the journey.
Virginia State Route 5, also known as SR 5, is a primary highway in Virginia connecting Charles City County and James City County.
Photographed above is Berkeley Plantation, which was established in 1619, and saw the first official Thanksgiving. The plantation could not have operated without the forced labor of enslaved people. Learn more when you visit the official Berkeley Plantation website.
Or, if you'd prefer a unique perspective of the road and landscape, you might consider taking the Virginia Capital Trail, which is a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle trail.
Have you ever driven along Virginia State Route 5? It’s historic, scenic, and well worth your time! And don’t forget to purchase a copy of A Guidebook to Virginia’s Historical Markers before your visit.
