We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Virginia is a state that’s positively perfect for a road trip. Whether you’re craving endless mountain vistas, beautiful rolling hills, or perhaps a taste of the beach, there’s a road trip that can be tailor-made to your interests. Today’s route is one of the lesser-known scenic drives in our state, but it showcases the beauty of the Eastern Shore. So hop in the car and prepare to be positively amazed by the spectacular coastal scenery that awaits you on Route 13.
Established in 1926, U.S. Route 13 stretches over 500 miles from North Carolina through Pennsylvania. Perhaps we're biased, but we believe the stretch in Virginia is the most beautiful of all.
You can start your Route 13 experience on the iconic Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. This 17-mile structure will take you over waters and then, miraculously, underwater.
One of the best parts about this scenic drive is the opportunity to enjoy the surrounding landscape. So be sure to take your time and soak up the views!

Continuing north, you'll pass Kiptopeke State Park, an enchanting natural preserve that showcases the stunning scenery of Cape Charles.

It's a wonderful place to park the car and explore for a bit. For more ideas, be sure to read all about Kiptopeke State Park in Virginia. Kiptopeke is home to the famous concrete fleet, which you can check out when you watch the fascinating drone footage below:
From here, keep driving and you'll soon arrive at a detour for Chincoteague Island near the Maryland border.
One of the many crown jewels of the Eastern Shore, Chincoteague is equal parts charming and beautiful. Whether you're exploring the National Wildlife Refuge or shopping downtown, you'll likely want to stop and stay awhile. And here's a perfect place to stay the night in Chincoteague. You'll agree that Chincoteague is absolutely magical, but for further proof, feel free to watch the brief drone video below:
So the next time you're in the mood for a good ol' fashioned road trip, you'll be glad you spent some time on Route 13 exploring Virginia's beautiful Eastern Shore.
