The great state of Virginia is home to some of the most incredible natural waterfalls, but some are a little further off the beaten path than others. Roaring Run falls is one of these, but is so worth the adventure of trying to find it!
The trail leading to the falls is 1.7 miles and is rated as easy. History lovers will want to spend some time at the trailhead and will enjoy seeing and exploring the historic iron furnaces that operated before the Civil War.
The picturesque trail hosts sections of boardwalks and gravel meandering through impressive rock formations and trees that will leave visitors in awe while providing a gentle challenge. There are plenty of places within the forest to have a picnic in the shade, and the nearby creek helps keep the area cool on the hottest days of the year.
The trail follows the creek where visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds of smaller waterfalls and cascades as they work up to the large falls. The creek is also an excellent place to kick off your shoes and cool your feet in the refreshing water.
The trail hosts many minor falls, cataracts, and rapids that are gorgeous to see, but the real attraction is the main falls. The rushing water tumbles 30 feet and splits beautifully around a large boulder. It's the sound of this tumbling water that gives this trail its unique name!
If you want to continue the hike after the falls, the trail continues to Hoop Hole and offers hikers more chances to see more of Virginia's wildlife, swim, wade, and explore the state’s incredible outdoor offerings.
To find this excellent waterfall, Take I-81 from Roanoke, to exit 150. From there go to US 220 north past Eagle Rock. At VA 615, turn left and go 5.5 miles to VA 621. Turn right onto VA 621 and go 1 mile to the Roaring Run entrance on left. The driving distance from I-81 is 27.5 miles and takes around 40 minutes total.
