That’s the famous line from “The Raven,” and it may very well be running through your mind as you explore the Edgar Allen Poe Museum in downtown Richmond, Virginia. This quirky destination is for history and poetry lovers alike, and it’s a wickedly wonderful way to spend an hour or two. Here’s more on what you can look forward to when you visit this famous Virginia landmark.
Though Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, he spent more of his life in Richmond, Virginia than any other place in the world.
Poe never lived in "The Old Stone House," which is now dedicated as the Poe Museum of Richmond. He likely walked by this historical landmark many times in his life, but it wasn't loaned to the Poe Foundation until 1927.
The house, which is believed to be the oldest remaining one in Richmond, is itself worthy of a visit. The stone structure offers a portal into downtown Richmond in the 18th century.
Inside the museum, you'll discover all kinds of artifacts, from original writings to Poe's childhood bed, to photographs, paintings, and more. You'll learn all about his most famous poems and some other more obscure ones, too.
There's no denying that a certain intrigue can be felt here. The enchanting garden, the historic house, the troubled history of Poe's life...it gives a certain "aliveness" to the property.
