We may be biased, but we believe Virginia has several incredible landmarks that are better than any others you’ll find in the country. While this may be a matter of opinion, we think you’ll agree with us. Especially after taking a look at some of the following photographs. From epic waterfalls to breathtaking mountain-scapes, here are some of the most remarkable sites in the whole U.S. that can be found right here in Virginia:
Sure, there are plenty of other beaches and coastlines throughout the United States. Yet Virginia's coast is something else altogether. No matter the time of year, witnessing a coastal sunrise is an experience you'll never forget. Not to mention the beach culture and dining opportunities that surround VA Beach.
This historic watermill along the Blue Ridge Parkway is perhaps one of the most iconic sites in the area. The sawmill and gristmill on site have both been restored so that visitors may experience live exhibitions of the milling process. In fact, this site is one of the most highly-photographed places along the entire Blue Ridge Parkway.
Shenandoah National Park is hands down one of the prized jewels of Virginia and the entire East Coast. Showcasing the Blue Ridge Mountains, this protected area is filled with trails, overlooks, and countless ways to enjoy the landscape. The park is also home to a significant portion of the Appalachian Trail, with iconic overlooks like McAfee Knob.
Like something from a storybook, Chincoteague Island is almost too picturesque to be true. Especially considering the presence of wild ponies, whose annual swim from Assateague is one of the most iconic events of the area. No matter what time of year you visit this National treasure, you're sure to be amazed.
For those with an interest in history, Colonial Williamsburg is nothing short of magical. Buildings that once sheltered the Nation's founders are still up and running today, and you can catch a glimpse of what life was like centuries ago. Not to mention the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. There's truly no town in the world quite like Williamsburg.
The Shenandoah Valley is a rather broad area, but its beauty is unparalleled. It's here that you can sample some of Virginia's fine wine while enjoying the picturesque beauty of horse country. It's no mystery why so many have fallen in love with the small town living of this enchanting area.
Grayson Highland State Park is perhaps the most breathtaking in all of Virginia. Like Chincoteague, this beloved area also is home to majestic wild ponies. Whether you're a fan of trail rides or meandering trails, you'll love spending an afternoon at this gem in southwestern Virginia.
Great Falls Park, shared between Virginia and Maryland, is an absolutely jaw-dropping area of cascading falls, rapids, and gorgeous wetlands. Drawing visitors near and far, this site is just a stone's throw from D.C. and couldn't feel more removed from city life.
The giant reservoir known as Smith Mountain Lake was created in 1963 in the Roanoke region. With over 500 miles of shoreline, this body of water lends itself to all sorts of recreational activities. Plus, it's absolutely gorgeous with the mountains close by.
Of course, these 9 sites just scratch the surface of Virginia’s incredible offerings. Which landmarks would you add to the above list? We’d love to hear from you! For related content, you’ll love learning about These 8 Natural Wonders In Virginia That Are Hiding In Plain Sight.
