A stroll around Colonial Williamsburg will reveal some of Virginia’s most historic homes. These charming structures are so picturesque that they often appear on postcards, inviting visitors from around the world to experience one of the country’s most charming towns. And yet, after dark, Williamsburg takes on a much spookier allure. In fact, this region is home to what many consider to be the most haunted house in America: the Peyton Randolph House. Here’s more on why you might consider touring this place during the day…but never after dark.
Tucked away in Williamsburg, one of the country's most picturesque and historic towns, you'll find the Colonial-era Peyton Randolph House.
Peyton Randolph was the elected president of the First and Second Continental Congress. He passed away shortly before the Declaration of Independence, but otherwise would have been remembered as a prominent forefather.
The Georgian-style home was constructed in 1715, with various modifications taking place over the following generations.
By 1968, the Peyton Randolph House re-opened to the public for tours. Walking these historic grounds, visitors began to notice something less tangible than the artifacts left behind. Something much more sinister.
Reports of hauntings began as early as 1824, when the noteworthy French general Marquis de Lafayette stayed the night and reported a mysterious phantom placing a hand on his shoulder, much to his terror.
Another haunting tale is that of the two children who passed away in the home. Security guards and tour guides have reported hearing the sound of children laughing and running through the halls. Some have even reported seeing the apparition of a child in one of the upstairs windows.
Perhaps the most disturbing story of all involves a security guard who became locked in the basement and felt something grab onto his legs aggressively. He wasn't released until he radioed for backup.
