Located in Orkney Springs, Shrine Mont is a retreat center known for its pristine beauty. It also happens to be home to one of the most exquisite chapels in the state. The Outdoor Chapel, also known as the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, is one of the most frequently visited spots in the area and is at the heart of the retreat. With its rich history and unique architecture, it is truly unlike any other chapel in the world.
Orkney Springs is located in the western region of the Shenandoah County, in northern Virginia. The name derives from the multiple sources of mineral springs underground, which have been believed to have healing powers. In fact, a public hotel was built in the early 1800s so that visitors could sample these waters in beautiful accommodations.
Pictured above is the Orkney Springs Hotel, and its oldest building (known as the Maryland House) was built in 1853. In 1976, the Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Three years later, the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia purchased the Hotel as part of the Shrine Mont Retreat.

What makes this chapel so unique is the fact that it is an open-air. Unlike most worship spaces associated with the Episcopal Diocese, this worship space is completely outdoors, with minimal structure to it. The centerpiece of the chapel, known as the Shrine of the Transfiguration, was built entirely of native stone. This allows the structure to fit seamlessly and naturally into its beautiful surroundings. This minimal architecture allows the space to become even more spiritual and inviting.

Shrine Mont welcomes various groups throughout the year for retreats and workshops. It's also the site of the Shenandoah Music Festival, a music series that takes place from July-September.
It's no surprise that the Outdoor Chapel is the site of many beautiful wedding ceremonies. Any time of year, this chapel makes for an incredible spot to visit and admire the natural beauty of the area.
