Virginia’s small towns are charming, welcoming, and almost always picturesque. Yet there are some places throughout the Old Dominion that time seems to have forgotten. One of them is the old mining town of Pocahontas, and its history is rather tragic. Pocahontas is largely considered to be the one place in Appalachia where the coal boom began. As soon as 1750, it was known that coal existed in this part of the country, though it wasn’t very sought-after. It wasn’t until after the Civil War that the region was surveyed for coal, and that’s when everything changed.
