Virginia is chock full of hidden wonders and unexpected surprises. For instance, did you realize that hiding behind our state’s oldest bookstore is an enchanting secret garden? Filled with roses and modeled after the English countryside, this attraction is nothing short of heavenly for those who have a weakness for used books and whimsical design.
Founded in 1924, the New Dominion Bookshop is the oldest of its kind in all of Virginia. This welcoming storefront is centrally located in Charlottesville's downtown pedestrian mall.
The store moved to this most recent location in the downtown mall in 1990. This beautiful brick building once served as a shoe store. And while the building itself is historically stunning, there's something even more magical awaiting outside.
The owner at the time of the move, Carol Troxell, planted a rose garden behind the store, off of the 4th Street alleyway. Every May, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking blooms that have totally transformed this modest yard.
New Dominion Bookshop is opened seven days a week and offers readings, visits by renowned authors, and other exciting events throughout the year. You'll be glad to have visited this unique Charlottesville landmark.
New Dominion Bookshop is located at 404 E Main St, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Have you visited this gem of a bookstore before? We’d love to hear about it! For additional information, you can follow New Dominion Bookshop on Facebook or visit their website by clicking here.
