Walking down the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, it's nearly impossible to miss the King Neptune Statue. It stands at 34 feet tall and weighs 12 tons.

So what is the history behind this behemoth? The statue was created by Virginia-based sculptor Paul DiPasquale and dedicated on September 30, 2005.

You may recognize DiPasquale's work if you've seen the Arthur Ashe statue on Monument Avenue in Richmond. Another artist by the name of Zhang Cong cast the work in bronze using traditional Chinese methods. As you can imagine, the process of putting together such an elaborate piece took years.
Today, the giant King Neptune inspires awe and wonder, with the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean behind him.
