There’s no doubt about it; Virginia is the land of unique hikes. Whether you’re looking for a trek up a mountain, a sand cave adventure, or coastal trails that will take your breath away, we’ve got a hike for you here in Virginia. Today, we’ll introduce you to yet another fabulous outing. Head to Manassas National Battlefield and you’ll discover incredible historical attractions as well as a gorgeous boardwalk hike.
Manassas National Battlefield is located just 25 miles south of Washington D.C. and preserves the site of two Civil War Battles: the First Battle of Bull Run and the Second Battle of Bull Run (also known as the Battles of Manassas).
The park contains over 5,000 acres of land and 40 miles of hiking. Enjoying this extensive trail system is the best way to appreciate the historical markers and haunting beauty of the former battlefield.
Many of the trails are loop trails, which meander through important areas of both battles. Photographed below is a boardwalk section of the First Battle of Manassas Trail Loop.
This particular trail measures 5.2 miles and offers breathtaking views of the countryside. You'll also gain insightful knowledge about the significant battle that took place here on July 16th, 1861.
Along the way, you'll enjoy reading the historical markers that tell the story of the battle scene. In addition to so much history, the trail offers a memorable outdoor adventure.
