However, these are equally impressive, considering the time, engineering, and ingenuity that often underlies such creations. Today’s feature destination is known as Backbone Rock, which was constructed in 1901 and has the unofficial nickname of the “Shortest Tunnel in the World.” Here’s more on this unique man-made wonder hiding near Damascus, Virginia.
Note: Backbone Rock is technically located on the Tennessee side of the Virginia/Tennessee border. However, the Backbone Rock Campground and Recreation Area can both be found in Virginia. We still think this manmade wonder near Virginia is worth exploring!
Backbone Rock Tunnel is a fascinating manmade wonder near Damascus, Virginia that everyone should explore at least once.
Constructed in 1901, this tunnel was created so that railroad access could be created between Shady Valley, TN, and Damascus, VA. Today, drivers can pass through what's been deemed affectionately as the World's Shortest Tunnel.
There are a few things to note about this adventure. A relatively steep climb is required, and the drop-offs are intense once at the top of the bridge.
