Is there anything better than taking a dip in a swimming hole? Whether you’re swimming at the base of a waterfall or taking a dip in a manmade lake, you’ll agree that summer is just a little sweeter when you can cool off in nature. One of our favorite swimming holes in Virginia is located at Douthat State Park. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, this lake is as beautiful as it is refreshing. Whether you’re traveling with the kiddos or consider yourself a kid-at-heart, you’ll love splashing around here.
Summer is a beautiful thing in Virginia. Endless days of sunshine, adventure, and the great outdoors all beckon to us. And nowhere is that truer than in the mountains.
Head to Millboro, Virginia, and you'll find the crown jewel of Virginia's state park system: Douthat State Park. It's one of the original six Virginia state parks, and its popularity has stood the test of time.
What sets this beautiful park apart is its pristine location in the Allegheny Mountains. There's something so soothing about seeing these blue-hued peaks in the distance.
During an especially warm day, there are few things better than taking a dip in the lake. For generations, this man-made swimming hole has delighted visitors of all ages.
There's a "shallow end" that's roped off so that the little ones can splash around. And, with a lifeguard on duty during most summer days, you can ensure the experience is as fun and safe as possible.
And, with all kinds of additional adventures to enjoy, there's no need to leave the park after your swim. Check out the 40 miles of hiking trails or picnic areas scattered throughout.
