Shenandoah National Park is a treasure trove of gorgeous trails, though not all are easily accessible. In fact, some of the most popular hikes are also the most difficult. Today, we’ll focus on a relatively moderate hike that can easily be completed in just a couple of hours. Prepare to be dazzled as you meander through what can only be described as an enchanted forest. And the best part of all? You’ll also enjoy some of the best mountain views in the entire park. Here’s more on this 3-mile loop that promises to impress.
To embark on your unforgettable Shenandoah National Park adventure, begin by parking at mile 39.1 along the picturesque Skyline Drive. The parking lot can fill up quickly, so the earlier you can arrive the better. For an alternate and shorter route to the overlook, you can also park at mile 41.7.
The 3-mile loop trail will follow the iconic Appalachian Trail as it leads you through the woods. You’ll love the feeling of being surrounded by such dense forest. Take your time to admire the old-growth trees and any flowers that might be blooming along the trail.
After approximately one-quarter of a mile, the white-blazed trail will intersect with the Passamaquoddy Trail. You’ll want to continue to the right to stay on route.
After just .2 miles, you’ll reach the first unique landmark of the trail: the Little Stony Man Cliffs. This spot is a popular destination among rock climbers. You’ll also love taking a break to admire scenic views of the valley below.
Continuing along the trail, you’ll arrive at the junction of the Stony Man Trail, a blue-blazed trail that you’ll follow for .3 more miles before arriving at the final scenic overlook.
Be sure to take your time admiring the beautiful view from this vista; indeed, it’s one of the most spectacular in the entire park. Bring a camera to take photos or enjoy a picnic in this memorable setting.
So whether you’re enchanted by the forest, mountain views, or a combination of the two, you’ll find there’s so much to love about the Little Stony Man Trail. Plus, after your hiking adventure, you can stop by Skyland Resort for a bite to eat!
