Gentle waves. Picturesque sand dunes. Abundant wildlife. Total immersion in nature. These are all characteristics of Savage Neck Dunes Natural Preserve, an off-the-beaten-path destination in Virginia that relatively few know about. Plus, it’s remote, located on the banks of the Eastern Shore near Cape Charles. Yet for those who make the journey, it’s hard to imagine a more rewarding destination.
Welcome to one of our state's most beloved treasures: Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve.
Like other wild spaces in the state, this preserve doesn't have many amenities, so you won't find restrooms or picnic areas here. What you will find is an abundance of natural habitats, wildlife, and landscapes to admire.
It's also important to note that the parking lot is small, only accommodating 8 vehicles. So be sure to arrive early and if no spots are available, try again later.
