When contemplating Virginia’s best summer activities, cost typically becomes a deciding factor. Fortunately, the one-of-a-kind experience we’ll introduce you to today is completely free of charge! The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry crosses the three-mile wide James River between the historic towns of Jamestown and Surry. It’s the perfect day trip adventure for history buffs and nature enthusiasts alike. Prepare to appreciate the mighty James from a new perspective and keep on the lookout for some truly breathtaking wildlife along the way.
The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry is operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation. While the primary function is to serve as transportation across the James River, passengers are delighted that the journey itself is an incredible experience.
There are typically three different ferries in operation: the Pocahontas, which can accommodate up to 75 vehicles, and the Surry and Williamsburg, which can each accommodate 50. The ferries run every 30 minutes until 8:00 p.m., when they run each hour.
Surrounded by so much exquisite beauty and history, you'll find that the ferry ride might just be the most relaxing part of your day. And the best part of all... it's completely free!
