There’s nothing like a change in perspective to inspire an appreciation for Virginia’s natural beauty. Today, we’ll introduce one such place that will take your love of Virginia to a new level — quite literally! Tucked away in Wythe County stands the historic Jackson Ferry Shot Tower. With an intriguing history and views for as far as the eye can see, this landmark is one that belongs on your radar. Here’s more on what you can expect from your trip to the Jackson Ferry Shot Tower.
The Jackson Ferry Shot Tower is the crown jewel of Shot Tower State Park, located just a quick drive from New River Trail State Park.
The shot tower was built by Thomas Jackson shortly after the Revolutionary War. Given the name and structure, one might think the purpose of this tower was a place to shoot from. In reality, it served as a place to manufacture lead shot for firearms.
A firewood furnace at the top of the tower would melt lead with arsenic. This would be poured through a sieve which would form lead drops of various sizes. These droplets would fall 150 feet to cool sufficiently before falling into a kettle of water at the base of the tower. The soft landing would keep the lead from deforming.
The Jackson Ferry shot tower is one of the last remaining of its kind in the U.S. When you visit, you'll enjoy this fascinating view into the 1800s.
Beautiful in any season, the shot tower is especially fun to visit during the fall when visitors can climb to the top of the tower and observe the foliage. The building in this photo below is an old schoolhouse, which has been partially renovated into a hotel.
Have you visited Shot Tower State Park and climbed to the top of the Jackson Ferry Shot Tower? If so, we’d love to hear all about your experience! What did you think of the view?
