In the early 1900s through the 1940s, this iconic Virginia hotel represented wealth, opulence, and luxury. Today, it’s a bit more of an approachable destination; however, its history is as fascinating as the views are lovely. When you think of Virginia Beach, you likely envision the beautiful coast, the family-friendly boardwalk, and the myriad of beachfront shops and restaurants.
After nearly two decades of planning, the Cavalier Hotel officially opened its doors in 1927. Some of its main attractions were the sprawling hills along the hotel's entrance -- a nod to the University of Virginia -- as well as a 290-acre golf course modeled after the Scottish courses at St. Andrews and North Berwick.
Each room had its own private bathroom, which was seen as a luxury at the time. Moreover, the bathtubs each had an extra faucet that would bring in water from the Atlantic Ocean -- a true saltwater bath! And the sinks had a similar special feature which drew ice-cold water from a large ice tub on the roof of the hotel.
The hotel even had a private train depot with a direct line from Chicago to bring in guests from out of state. Plus, any guests arriving by ship would be met with a limo!
During WWII, the hotel was temporarily used for military occupation. After the war, it took a while for the property to regain its former glory.
It wasn't until 2018 that the hotel re-opened under its original name: The Cavalier Hotel. And today, this resort is nothing short of an iconic Virginia destination.
