This unique topography has earned it the reputation of being the Little Switzerland of Virginia, and it’s truly a treasure. The town has just 2,300 residents, but often welcomes visitors who are looking for a unique getaway destination in the mountains of western Virginia. Welcome to Highland County! Despite being one of the least-populated regions in Virginia, this area is positively brimming with natural beauty.
The moment you arrive in Highland County, you'll understand how this area received its nickname. Beautiful mountain views, verdant farmlands, and rolling hills are all reminiscent of a Swiss landscape.
Each year, Highland County hosts its famous Highland Maple Festival that attracts nearly 50,000 visitors. From demonstrations to unique gifts and delicious maple donuts, this festival has something for everyone.
If you're looking for an elevated perspective of the county, you might consider climbing to the top of Sounding Knob Fire Tower. If you can brave 100 steps, you'll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view.
After working up an appetite, be sure to stop by High's Restaurant, one of the local favorites. It's here that you'll find an impressive variety of Southern cuisine and comfort foods.
Another unique way to explore the Little Switzerland of Virginia is to embark on the Barn Quilt Trail. You'll find 50 of these brightly-colored patterns along the designated route.
