Virginia’s natural wonders are meant to be explored. From towering waterfalls to impressive mountain peaks, there’s no shortage of beautiful natural spaces to enjoy here in the Old Dominion. A lesser-known but no-less-impressive landmark, the Channels State Forest is perfect for nature lovers of all kinds. This gem in southwestern Virginia boasts a natural maze, beautiful mountain peaks, and adventures galore. So lace up those boats — it’s time to explore!
Welcome to the Channels! The state's 53rd natural area, this beautiful space is comprised of high-elevation forest and marvelously unique rock outcroppings. To explore this forest is to admire Virginia's wilderness at its finest.
If you've ever wondered how this state forest earned its name, you'll quickly discover the answer as you make your way through the maze-like channels residing at 4,000 feet above sea level.
You'll encounter the intricate system of sandstone crevices and boulders on your way to the summit of Clinch Mountain's Middle Knob. Perhaps what's most fascinating of all is that this labyrinth was formed during the last ice age!
Once you reach the top of Middle Knob, you can look forward to sweeping 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. It's a photo-worthy moment you won't forget!
As you explore the region, you'll also appreciate knowing that it wasn't long ago that the area was totally inaccessible. In 2004, the Nature Conservancy created the state forest and also charted two routes to the famous maze.
