Small towns are arguably the most beloved aspect of Virginia. They add character, charm, and natural beauty to every corner of our state. There are so many of these hidden gems that often fly under the radar, and the town of Gate City is a prime example. Tucked away near Clinch Mountain is a town of just over 2,000 with plenty to offer. Often noted as the gateway to southwestern Virginia, Gate City is steeped in history and natural beauty. Here’s more on the small town you just may fall in love with:
The town of Gate City can be found in the scenic mountains of southwestern Virginia.
The town was officially incorporated in 1892 and was named "Gate City," for its proximity to Big Moccasin Gap, a symbolic gateway to the American West.
One of the tell-tale signs of a charming small town is often its ability to honor the past. Driving through the main stretch of Gate City, you'll see that little has changed in decades.
Gate City remains the seat of Scott County and is also part of the "Tri-Cities" region, along with the Tennessee towns of Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport.
Natural beauty is an inherent part of life in this former pioneer town. The nearby Clinch Mountain provides a gorgeous vista and insight into the Appalachian landscape.
In fact, Gate City is located right along the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail, a historic trail that marks Daniel Boone's progress through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky.
