Don’t be fooled by the name: Dismal Falls is one of southwestern Virginia’s most beautiful natural attractions. This 10-foot multi-tiered cascade is beautiful in any season, especially during the summer when outdoor temperatures are high. For those with an adventurous spirit, the falls make for an excellent day trip destination. And for those especially daring, the base of the falls is the perfect place for a breathtaking dip. Without further ado, here’s how you can enjoy one of the best swimming holes in Virginia.
The Falls of Dismal can be accessed via a short trail near the designated parking area, located along State Route 671.
Once you arrive at the falls, you'll certainly understand what the hype is all about. The 40-foot-wide cascade is made up of a series of ledges, which give the falls a distinct stair-like appearance.
If you're daring enough to take the adventure one step further, you might even wade into the water. This base of the falls is famously refreshing and could be described as nature's own plunge pool.
The next time you're looking for a quick escape into nature, you'll love this natural swimming hole located in the heart of a national forest.
