Ever dreamed of reliving a classic dance movie from the 80s? Well now’s your chance. Dirty Dancing takes place at the Kellerman Resort, a fictional spot located in the Catskills of New York. But the movie was actually filmed here in Virginia, at a charming resort known as Mountain Lake Lodge. This summer, the resort is offering Dirty Dancing-themed weekends. We guarantee you’ll have the time of your life. (Cue the music!)
It's no mystery why Mountain Lake Lodge was chosen for the setting of the film. The resort lies in the middle of a 2,600 acre nature preserve in the Appalachian mountains.
Not only can you stay at this beautiful resort, you can even sign up for a weekend dedicated to the movie. The dates for this years Dirty Dancing weekends are July 29-31st, and August 26-28th.
The weekend starts at around $335 a night, and in addition to the accommodations includes meals, a film tour, trivia, and, of course, dance lessons and a Saturday night party. (Falling madly in love and mastering impressive dance moves not included...but you just never know!)
And speaking of romance, the resort is well-known for being one of the most romantic spots in the state. It's the site of many gorgeous weddings and memorable getaways.
Mountain Lake Lodge underwent intense renovations in 2012, the same year when it was almost shut down. Despite frequent visits by film lovers, the endowment that owned the property had to face the difficult fact that the property was losing money.
Fortunately, 'Dirty Dancing' themed weekends have been a big factor in bringing money back to the resort. As stated in their mission, the hopes of bringing people to the lodge are to continue supporting the endowment, ensuring that families can continue to enjoy the beautiful facility and surroundings.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Mountain Lodge is its dedication to history. You might recognize these iconic cabins from the movie, where Baby and her family stayed for the summer. These are the same cabins that have been on the property for over 150 years and are still available for hosting families today.
Whether you visit for a themed weekend or just happen to drop by for a quick visit, you're in for a real treat at Mountain Lodge. 2017 will mark the 30th anniversary of the film, and you can bet the resort has some exciting things in store. Time to brush up on those dance moves!
So go ahead and pack a light sweater and your white Keds, and rehearse all of those classic lines from the film. For booking information, be sure to check out Mountain Lake Lodge’s website. We can’t wait to hear about your experience there!
