Today’s feature destination has recently been recognized as one of the most underrated small towns in the country, and we couldn’t agree more! If you appreciate being outdoors and engaging in some authentic adventure, the town of Damascus will delight you. Here’s more on this under-the-radar town with loads to offer.
Welcome to Damascus, Virginia! Fondly known as Trail Town USA, this beloved destination is located at the intersection of multiple major trails. In short, it's a hiker's paradise.
Perhaps one of the most famous nearby trails is the Virginia Creeper Trail. Stretching from Abingdon to White Top, this multi-use trail offers some of the most exquisite and varied scenery in Virginia.
Another intersecting trail is the famous Appalachian Trail, which runs from Georgia to Maine. Thru-hikers cherish Damascus as a friendly trail town with some of the best home-cooking in the region.
Other trails that go through Damascus include the Trans-America National Bicycle Trail, the Iron Mountain Trail, and Virginia’s Birding and Wildlife Trail. Imagine having hiked or biked for miles on end and then arriving inside this charming town!
Of course, you don't need to arrive on foot to appreciate all that Damascus has to offer. If you prefer the charm of downtown, you could easily spend an afternoon perusing local art stores and cafes.
But if you happen to visit when the weather is nice, exploring at least one of the trails is a must. Day hikes range from easy to challenging, so you're bound to find an adventure that appeals to you.
