Our list of beautiful covered bridges in Virginia to experience during the fall begins with the most famous: Humpback Covered Bridge. Located in Covington, Virginia, this one-of-a-kind arched bridge was built in 1857. In fact, it's the only covered humpback bridge that remains in the U.S. Visit during the fall season and you can look forward to beautiful foliage surrounding the area.
2. Meems Bottom Covered Bridge

Meems Bottom Covered Bridge, located near the town of Mount Jackson, covers 204 feet and is the longest of Virginia's covered bridges. The bridge was constructed in 1892 and spans the north fork of the Shenandoah River. Historians believe that there were at least two former covered bridges in this same area, likely lost to fire and flood.

3. Jack's Creek Covered Bridge

Next up on our list of beautiful covered bridges in Virginia is Jack's Creek Covered Bridge, also known as Upper Covered Bridge, is located near Woolwine. Built sometime around 1914 - 1916 as a queen post truss construction, the bridge spans 48 feet. The bridge is the site of the annual Patrick County Covered Bridge Festival in June, although if you visit during the fall, you'll enjoy a different kind of scenery.
4. Sinking Creek Bridge

Last, but not least, we arrive at Sinking Creek Bridge. Located in the town of Newport in Giles County, this picturesque covered bridge was built in 1916. Also known as Clover Hollow Bridge, it spans a length of 70 feet and is famous for its trademark red paint and tin roof.

  1. How many covered bridges in Virginia are there?

Once upon a time, the state of Virginia had literally hundreds of covered bridges. Over time, most of them disappeared for various reasons, leaving only seven remaining at the time of this writing. Of these seven covered bridges in Virginia, four are open to the public, and we definitely recommend visiting each one and giving it the time and care it deserves. Plus, these bridges are outrageously photogenic, so be sure to bring a camera. The other three are on private property, so unfortunately we can’t explore them.  

  1. Which bridges in Virginia should I add to my bucket list?

Since there are just a few covered bridges in Virginia that are open to the public, these are the bridges in Virginia we recommend you visit. These bridges consist of:  

  • Meems Bottom Covered Bridge – This 204-foot-long bridge is the longest covered bridge in Virginia and was built back in 1892.  
  • Humpback Bridge – This bridge is Virginia’s oldest, having been built in 1857.  
  • Jack’s Creek Bridge – This old beauty was built in 1914 and is one of the “younger” bridges in Virginia!
