As one of the 13 original colonies, the state of Virginia played a pivotal role in the early days of America. Additionally, this takes us to the city of Williamsburg, which was the capital of the colony. As a result, there is an abundance of historical landmarks to see but if you want an authentic dining experience, look no further than Josiah Chowning’s Tavern.
Chowning's claim to fame has always been its fantastic food and entertainment. Since its founding in 1941, it has become a Williamsburg staple.
The front of the building is highlighted by the classic pub signpost. It's similar to the ones seen in the UK, which have been a tradition for centuries.
This isn't the actual building that housed the original Josiah Chowning's Tavern in 1766, but the colonial-era business has been faithfully recreated. The architecture and décor are accurate representations of what the tavern would have looked like in the 1700s.
The Shepherd’s Pye is made with lamb, aromatics, and Irish colcannon potatoes. The house-made spicy wings are also available for a more up-to-date option.
Perfect for a chilly evening, the Brunswick Stew is made of young fowl and beef cooked with sliced vegetables, grated corn, and Irish potatoes. This hearty meal is sure to warm you up!
Balladeers are musicians who compose ballads, and pictured above are two musicians performing at Chowning's. The tavern also offers other 18th-century diversions to keep guests coming back for more. Whenever you visit, be on the lookout for dine-in entertainment!
