For better or for worse, Virginia is positively riddled with ghostly sites. Such lists as this prove that our state may very well be considered the most haunted in the nation. Yet there are plenty of haunted sites that remain relatively unknown. One prime example lies on the picturesque Chincoteague Island. It takes us back in time to the early 19th century and tells of a love story gone horribly wrong. Here’s more on the baffling tale of the Captain Timothy Hill House:
The historic home known as the Captain Timothy Hill House can be found on Chincoteague Island. The historic site dates back to 1800 and is thus considered to be the oldest remaining building on the Island. The house was moved in 1980 after threat of demolition yet still offers a window into a different time. What may appear as a lovely home on the outside seems to have a tangible haunted quality as soon as one steps inside.
When the house stood near the water, the children who lived inside would watch the ships pass by and carve their image into the wood. Remnants of this early graffiti can still be visible today. One family whose history has left an equal mark on the house was that of Captain Timothy Hill himself.
Captain Hill had many children yet favored his daughter Jennie the most. He was adamant about his daughter marrying someone well-educated and wealthy and therefore refused to allow the marriage between Jennie and one of her childhood friends, Tom Freeman. The news of such rejection absolutely devastated Tom, who snapped and killed Jennie in an ambush before killing himself.
Knowing the tragic history of the family who once lived here, it comes as no surprise that the house would be quite haunted. Many believe that the ghost of Jennie still haunts the building today, seeking amends for the wrong that was done to her. It's hard to deny the baffling nature of the story: if Tom had truly loved Jennie, why would he have sought to harm her in any way? Perhaps we'll never understand, yet the building still remains today for those curious to step inside.
Those interested in viewing the house can do so in the spring and summer, when the building is open to tour on Fridays from 1PM – 3PM. The address of this historical site is 5122 Main St, Chincoteague Island, VA 23336. Have you visited the Captain Timothy Till House before? If so, we’d love to hear about your experience there.
