Just because temperatures are dropping doesn’t mean you can’t still get out there and enjoy Virginia’s beautiful scenery. We’ve got the perfect hike in mind that will offer you scenic river views and the chance to admire one of the state’s most noteworthy natural attractions. So if you’re hankering for an outdoor adventure, plan your visit to Breaks Interstate Park — you won’t regret it!
If there's just one adventure you embark upon this season, it should be a trip to Breaks Interstate Park in the southwestern portion of the state.
This state park is shared between Virginia and Kentucky and features one of the most unique natural attractions in either state. The namesake 'Break' refers to the 1,000 foot canyon that was carved by the Russell Fork River.
Today, visitors can enjoy a number of trails that meander through this impressive state park and reveal show-stopping views. Photographed below is the Russell Fork River.
One of the best ways to enjoy all that the park has to offer is by taking the Breaks Interstate Loop Trail. This 3-mile trek has a moderate elevation gain and is well-marked.
In fact, Breaks Interstate Park is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the South. Seeing as it's the largest, and most dramatic, canyon east of the Mississippi, the name is all too fitting.
So if you haven't had the chance to experience Breaks Interstate Park before, now's your chance. Prepare yourself for incredible views that might just stop you in your tracks. Lace up those hiking boots and don't forget your camera!
Breaks Interstate Park is located at 627 Commission Cir., Breaks, VA 24607. Have you visited the park recently and hiked any of the trails? We’d love to hear about your experience! For more information on the park, you can visit the official visitor’s website here.
