Virginia’s Breaks Interstate Park is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the South. Due to its dramatic canyon-like landscape, it’s not difficult to see the comparison. Soon there will be yet another reason to visit this incredible park, which is shared with the state of Kentucky. Breaks Interstate Park will soon feature the longest swinging pedestrian bridge in North America.
Shared between southeastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia awaits one of the country's most beautiful and unique parks: Breaks Interstate. Established in 1954, the park has seen countless visitors and explorers over the course of its history.
The fascinating canyon began its formation 180 million years ago, when a massive inland sea receded and the Russel Fork River began to carve out the gorge you see today.
Yet there's another attraction in the works that may top them all. A recent report tells of a $433,000 grant from the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority that will be used toward the construction of a 725-foot pedestrian swinging bridge.
This newest addition will surely bring more visitors to this beautiful corner of Virginia. Do you think you'd be brave enough to cross the epic swinging bridge once it's completed?
