It’s a common misconception that the most beautiful overlooks in Virginia require a strenuous climb. In fact, some of the best vistas in the state can be accessed from moderate trails. For those who enjoy the view, but don’t love exerting much energy on the trail, these treks are perfect. A prime example is the Blackrock Summit. While there are more lengthy routes to reach the top, a little bit of navigating will get you to the overlook in just one mile. Here’s more on this breathtaking mountain trail.

Blackrock Summit is a gorgeous Virginia trail that can be found within the boundaries of Shenandoah National Park. If you plan on completing the hike during the weekend, be sure to get an early start as this trail is a popular one.

To begin, park at the lot located at mile marker 84.4. You’ll then follow signs for the Appalachian Trail going south. Once you start hiking, the 1.1-mile loop won’t take you too long to complete. A majority of the trail is wooded and shaded, making for ideal conditions even in the middle of the summer.

The trail is well-maintained, although it’s a good idea to wear sturdy shoes as you will encounter rocks and a bit of a scramble the closer you get to the summit.
