Located in Virginia’s popular First Landing State Park, Bald Cypress Trail is an easy 1.8-mile loop trail. This trail takes visitors on an easy walk to see the beautiful bald cypress habitats and is a great place for everyone to see some of the beautiful scenery that Virginia has to offer.

The easy trail is comprised of stretches of sandy gravel, pine soil, and even a few boardwalks. The trail is shady and cool in warmer months and is easily accessible even in winter.

Visitors may begin this hike from the First Landing State Park Trail Center, which has RV parking, a covered picnic pavilion, and a wheelchair-accessible bathroom. Bald Cypress Trail is well-loved all year round and is great for families, including their leashed dogs.

One of the main attractions of this trail are the Bald Cypresses for which it is named. These tall deciduous trees have needle-like leaves and distinctive “knees” that rise up from the soil or water around them. These trees can live to be more than a thousand years old!

Another interesting feature of this trail are the “rainbows” that are present on the trail throughout the year. Besides the gorgeous autumn leaves, visitors may see a special rainbow on the surface of the cypress ponds at certain times of the day all year. These special rainbows are caused by natural oils in decaying vegetation and bacteria and are the delight of many guests who have the opportunity to witness this phenomenon.
