The tragedies endured at Bacon's Castle are numerous, and many of them were endured by the slaves that were kept there under horrible circumstances. During the colonial years, there were as many as 300 slaves on the property. There were 18 slave quarters, and only one remains today (photographed below).

Investigators believe that many of the disembodied spirits are those of the slaves who were subject to insufferable living conditions. While the mansion was decorated lavishly, the slave quarters hardly had any furniture at all. In place of beds, servants were expected to sleep on piles of hay and rags.

Inside the mansion, furniture has been known to move about on its own, and there are even disembodied voices telling visitors to get out. What is the most haunted place in Virginia?

There are so many haunted locations throughout the state of Virginia, and it's difficult to assess which is the single most haunted. However, many paranormal investigators agree that Scotchtown in Beaverdam, Virginia tops the list. This historic home once belonged to Patrick Henry and his wife Sarah Shelton Henry from 1771 to 1778. In fact, Patrick Henry wrote his famous speech that included the line "Give me liberty or give me death" inside this house. After Sarah gave birth to their sixth child, she began to suffer from mental illness and was confined to a straight dress (an early form of a straight jacket). She died in the house, although many believe her spirit still lingers. In fact, it's not unusual to see a figure in a long white dress walking outside or holding a candle in the upstairs window.
