Wildflowers are stunning wherever they appear, but there’s something special about stumbling upon a hidden hollow of hundreds in bloom. This charming Vermont wildflower hiking trail will take you past some truly lovely blooms. Here’s what you need to know.

The amazing hiking to be had in Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest is no secret, but this little wildflower hollow may be. The Leicester Hollow trail in Middlebury District near Forest Dale is the perfect place to view wild-growing flowers in bloom.

Leicester Hollow is a steep-sided valley edged by forest and filled with an exceptional amount of beautiful flowers, ferns, and other flora. If you stop by during the late spring or early summer, you’ll be treated to the sight of hundreds of blooms opening at once.

The hollow is home to a large number of goldenrod plants, as well as plenty of large-flowered bellwort, walking fern, and at least 70 other species of lush plant life. The ideal time to catch the flowers in bloom is around June.

Blooming times vary by year and rainfall amount, so you might want to check in earlier and later to catch all the flowers looking their best. It’s also a great place to picnic, especially if you can find an open area near a bunch of goldenrod.

To reach this wildflower hollow, you’ll need to hike the Leicester Hollow Trail which joins the Minnie Baker Trail. Be sure to take plenty of insect repellant with you on this hike, as some areas can be pretty buggy.

The southern end of the trail winds along Leicester Hollow Brook and eventually leads to Silver Lake, which is an awesome spot for a swim.

Hiking the entire Leicester Hollow Trail should take you about two hours, but you can tailor your walk to your own time constraints or fitness level. The main thing is to check it out before the flowers disappear, so don’t delay!
