For people who love a good cup of joe, they are always on the hunt for places wherever they go. We’re not talking about the generic Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts… No, we’re looking for good, hearty coffee served in an atmosphere of like-minded coffee connoisseurs – bonus points if they also have an offering of sweet treats or a creative menu. Here are 14 places around Vermont that are worth stopping for a caffeinated pick-me-up.
1. Rogue Artisans Cafe - Morrisville.
This newcomer in the coffee scene has certainly made a splash when it comes to the best cup of joe! Rogue Artisans opened a little over 4 months ago and have been rated #1 on yelp, trip advisor and a few other local and national websites and papers. The food is also out of this world!
2. Mirabelles – Burlington.
If you’ve been here once, you’ve probably gone back again and again. It's always filled with quality food, coffee and macaroons, and it's always packed with people...a good sign. The sandwiches are unique without being too weird, their baked goods are fabulous, and the full service coffee bar is great. A staple in downtown Burlington.
3. Muddy Waters - Burlington.
Here is a high quality coffee to balance out your life. Funky atmosphere and good strong coffee, though the cups are small. You can sit here all day reading material supplied or bring your own.
4. Carol’s Hungry Mind Café – Middlebury.
Huge space with indoor & outdoor seating. Lots of coffee, tea, espresso & beverage options to cater to all types! Also yummy baked treats and protein snacks. Count on being greeted with a smile and overwhelmed by the menu. You may be gently guided along and asked: Caffeine or no caffeine? Caffeine. Coffee or tea? Coffee. Iced or hot? Iced. Many recommend the 'Sap Sucker,' which is 1 oz of maple syrup, 1 oz half & half and coffee poured over ice and shaken! Who wouldn't like this? Especially with a price point of around $4.
5. Black Cap Coffee
Located in the heart of the down town village in Stowe, this pick me up coffee is fun, friendly and delicious. Be sure to order your thanksgiving pies - you'll certainly be "thankful" you did!
6. Village Wine and Coffee – Shelburne.
Coffee AND wine – now we’re talking! Although note that the wine is only to shop, not to drink there. The oh-so-important coffee is great and so are the treats. The tables are a little close and noisy, but that’s part of the charm with its bright, and ever changing art exhibits.
7. Vergennes Laundry – Vergennes.
Now this is a real coffee shop straight out of Paris with pastries from heaven and a huge bread oven in full view. The Vergennes Laundry defines hand-crafted coffee (or, god forbid, tea). If you want a jewel of a coffee, go here.
8. South Street Café – Bennington.
The South Street Cafe is one of the classic-style couch and table places, with board games and puzzles galore! The excellent, strong coffee comes from Vermont Coffee Company and the treats are home baked. It’s totally worth the search for a parking spot!
9. Capitol Grounds – Montpelier.
Located in the heart of the capitol of Vermont, the coffee is strong, just the way you like it. The service may be a little slow because it is jam packed with people having meetings, but Capitol Grounds can make you coffee any way you like it. If you love the coffee, it's sold in bags too.
10. Mocha Joe’s – Brattleboro.
Mocha Joe’s is the real thing. The aroma of coffee beans pervades as you peruse the little nooks for sitting, reading, talking. Guaranteed great, strong coffee with treats on the sweet side. I dare you not take home a bag of beans.
11. Tuckerbox – White River Junction.
Need a pit stop for healthy lunch food? You found the right place with excellent coffee in round handled mugs that you can wrap your hands around.
12. Maple Grove Bakery – Quechee.
Individually brewed cups of rich dark coffee. Enjoy the custom made pastries and sandwiches which are a perfect compliment.
13. The Coffee House – Wilmington.
The Coffee House is barely a house, it’s more like a tiny shed. But boy does this place know coffee! No tables, no accommodations, but they love to drink and talk coffee and have homemade treats too.
14. Almost home – Bristol.
This gem has tasty food, a small housewares section and, of course, fresh and excellent coffee. You can’t help but love this little store in Bristol. There are daily specials to choose from, and if you spy their delicious broccoli salad be sure to grab some. It will not disappoint!
