Two years ago, the Gilfeather Turnip became Vermont’s state vegetable. These aren’t any regular old turnips, they are something pretty special. This particular root vegetable stands out from the rest and to celebrate it there will be a great big turnip festival on October 27th and you’re going to want to go.
Join in all of the hullabaloo of the Gilfeather Turnip Festival on October 27, 2018, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. This event takes place rain or shine in Wardsboro and is free to the public. Bring the whole family to enjoy tons of turnip type food and activities.
The Gilfeather Turnip stands out from its counterparts because it is actually a cross between a turnip and a rutabaga making it a sweet and creamy vegetable. It was originally produced right here in Wardsboro, Vermont on the Gilfeather farm and has been in high demand for over 100 years.
The town will roll out the red carpet to honor this root vegetable. Craft and market vendors set up in the town hall and along Main Street. Purchase turnips by the pound and browse the other selection of charming wares like pottery, folk art, and of course, food.
Sample the signature Gilfeather turnip soup. There's nothing more perfect on a crisp autumn day in the Green Mountain state.
The soup isn't the only turnip offering. Try donuts and other mouthwatering treats. Younger visitors can enjoy face painting and games between bites.
One of the highlights of the festival is the turnip contest. Entries are judges in categories of largest grown in Wardsboro, largest grown outside Wardsboro, best turnip name, and best strange and funny turnip
Children are encourage to enter the contest too. Ribbons are awarded to anyone 12 and under. Enter one of the many raffles going on throughout the day for other chances to win prizes.
Even though this fall festival plays homage to the humble turnip, you'll find plenty of fall favorites like the mighty pumpkin too. Enjoy a whole day of down-home Vermont fun at this unique celebration.
The Gilfeather Turnip Festival is sponsored by the non-profit Friends of the Wardsboro Library to raise funds to support the Gloria Danforth Memorial Building. Visit the festival from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m in Wardsboro on October 27, 2018. Learn more by visiting their
