Flowers, flowers everywhere is what we love about this amazing springtime destination in Vermont. It’s the perfect blend of natural beauty and history when you visit Hildene Farm. You don’t need an official peony festival in Vermont to be able to enjoy a delightful spring garden filled with these wonderfully fragrant blossoms.

Hildene in Manchester, VT is a wonderful place to visit each spring to enjoy a bountiful peony garden. The best time to visit is in the last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of June. This is the perfect place to spend an afternoon for families, couples, or anyone who just loves flowers.

The beautiful Hildene home sits on a hill overlooking the beautiful Taconic Mountains to the west, the Green Mountains to the east, and the Battenkill River flowing in the valley below. The home was built by Robert and Mary Lincoln in the early 1900s. Robert was the only living child of Abraham Lincoln.

The estate is an explosion of color, fragrance, and beauty courtesy of thousands – yes, thousands – of fresh peonies. Many of these blooms are actually from the historic estates’s original 1907 plants. It’s like a history lesson and a nature walk wrapped up in a gorgeous bundle.

Green thumbs and cooks will also want to stop by the kitchen and cutting gardens. Admission to the peony gardens is included in the cost of admission to Hildene. General admission is $23 per adult and $6 for children between six and 16. Kids under six are free. Don’t miss this spectacular spring destination all about history, peonies, and fun.

What are some spring festivals in Vermont?
When spring rolls around in Vermont it is time to celebrate. Here are a few events, activities, and spring festivals in Vermont that we think you'll love:

  • Vermont Maple Festival, St. Albans, VT: Toward the end of April, maple trees all over Vermont are tapped to give us the golden elixir that Vermont is famous for worldwide. Maple syrup! At the St. Albans Maple Festival, this charming town brings people together for a fun event that has been treating maple fans to a good time for nearly 60 years. Spend a weekend at the end of April learning about and enjoying maple goodies, watching the parade, participating in the Sap Run, and enjoying live music, food, and games.
  • Countryman Peony Farm, Northfield, VT: While not a full-blown festival, this peony farm is still one of our favorite places to visit in spring. The farm is open to the public from June 1 until June 30 when the peonies are most likely to be in bloom. If you are looking for a day to walk among these bright colorful blossoms in a beautiful mountainous setting, we think you'll love it here. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a warm spring day. The farm is open Thursday through Sunday.
  • Quechee Hot Air Balloon Festival, Quechee, VT: Mid-June may be heading into early summer in Vermont, but this festival is too good not to mention and start planning for in the spring. Spend the weekend surrounded by a colorful explosion of hot air balloons soaring high above Quechee Green Park. On the ground, you can still enjoy an exciting music festival, a craft show, the free Kids Zone, and food and drink vendors galore.

We don't need official Vermont spring festivals to enjoy the natural beauty in our state. If you love the outdoors as much as we do, you'll love this day trip to Montpelier and the Mad River Valley.
