Burlington is home to many places, and perhaps the most popular is the campus of the University of Vermont. Its bustling streets and historic buildings are wondrous to look at, and sometimes a bit ominous. If you’ve felt a sense of foreboding or a chill going through your body when you’re here, there is a chance you’ve had a paranormal encounter. After all, many of the buildings at UVM are said to be haunted.
With so many buildings making up the UVM campus, we’ve put together a tour of this neighborhood which houses students of the present and the past. Have you ever experienced a ghostly encounter at one of these buildings?

The Jacobs House, Center for counseling and testing – 146 South Williams Street, Burlington

The ghost of Captain Jacobs, a retired seaman who died there in the early 20th century, has made appearances. A psychiatrist who witnessed the ghost described him as an elderly gentleman with distinct facial features and a bulbous nose and was "shimmery like a jellyfish" gliding down the stairway. A janitor also encountered this ghost one night and it allegedly knocked over his mop bucket, then flickered the lights.
Converse Hall – 75 Colchester Avenue, Burlington
It is thought that a ghost named Henry, a former student who committed suicide in the 1920s, haunts this building. Students and faculty have reported beer cans flying across the room, lights flickering on and off, doors opening and shutting, typewriters typing by themselves, a rocking chair rocking by itself, mysteriously rearranged dorm rooms and a bolted mirror falling off the wall.
The Allen House - 461 Main Street, Burlington
You may not be able to see the ghost who resides on the top floor of the Allen House, but a cold presence has been reported to follow people around.
Redstone Hall - 376 So. Prospect Street, Burlington
The ghost here irregularly appears in the back staircase and has been seen running through walls. He supposedly is not fond of females and has been known to chase people out of the area.
Bittersweet House - 153 South Prospect St., Burlington

A 19th century woman in period dress sporadically appears; one witness described seeing the middle aged apparition on several occasions. Security guards have backed the story of with their own reports of shadowy figures and strange noises.
Coolidge Hall - 402 S Prospect St., Burlington

This dormitory has a few ghosts, including a male who likes to wake the residents up by staring at them.
Grasse Mount 411 Main St., Burlington

While at the Grasse Mount, you may be able to hear voices along with doors locking and slamming on the second floor even when no one is up there.

Strange noises are commonly coming from under the staircase leading into Section B.
Millis Hall - 67 Spear Street, Burlington

A female ghost is said to have haunted the second floor of this dormitory during the 1997-1998 school year.
Simpson Hall - 438 S Prospect St., Burlington

Perhaps the scariest tale is about the ghost of a man who now resides in Simpson Hall. He is said to have stalked a girl and followed her to her dorm one year, and now students awake late at night with the feeling they are being watched. The room apparently turns very cold when these occurrences happen, and on rare occasions, someone will wake up freezing cold with a feeling that someone is in their bed. Yikes!
