Some say that fear is like a drug, which is why we love scary movies, frightening tales and most of all, haunted places. From houses to graveyards and everything in between, the idea of a haunting piques our interest and sends shivers down our spines. Vermont is full of ghost stories and legends, but most of them are spread out through the state; however, the town of Bennington in Southern Vermont has a few places that leave our knees knocking. Let’s check out some of the haunted places in and around this haunted town in VT, shall we?
Jennings Hall.
This building at Bennington College was once known as Jennings Mansion and is now used for music students. Students who work there at night have reported strange noises coming from the corners of the rooms along with footsteps and voices. There have even been reports of instruments playing all on their own. Perhaps the footsteps often heard are of ghosts trying to keep tempo, and maybe the voices are trying to sing along. You decide.
In fact, 1959 novel by Shirley Jackson is thought to be based on Jennings Hall.
This book is considered one of the beat literary ghost stories published during the 20th century.
Southern Vermont College.
Southern Vermont College is located in the former Edward Everett Estate which was originally built as a summer house. Soon after the completion of the mansion Everett's first wife mysteriously passed away. Legends say she drowned (or maybe even murdered) but the official report states that she died during a surgery after a long illness.
But she's not the only Mrs. Everett to grace these halls...
A much younger Mrs. Everett #2 came along and did not get along with Everett's 3 daughters. In 1929 when he passed away, the battle of the estate between his second wife and his daughters was so nasty it became known as "The Battle of the Bennington Millions."
Reports of Edward Everett, his two wives and a black hooded figure have been seen roaming the mansion over the years.
Other ghostly reports include smoke filled hallways, mysterious footsteps, lights turning on in locked rooms as well as doors and windows locking on their own.
The third floor is known to be burning with energy here.
It was on the third floor where a maid once hung herself.
Another haunted place at Southern Vermont College is the Carriage Barn.
Along with seeing a man in old fashioned clothes roaming around, the lights and computers here turn off all on their own.
Glastenbury Mountain.
Just outside of town you'll find the place where mysterious disappearances are among the many disturbing things that have happened here. However, only one body was ever recovered and the rest remain a mystery. Would you go hiking in this spooky place? Check out more about the stories, legends and disappearances
