Some of the paranormal activity here may be connected to a local philanthropist who was buried here in 1899.

John E. Hubbard was a businessman who had accumulated a fair amount of wealth before he came into a large inheritance. When his aunt died, she had left most of her estate to the city, bequeathing a large amount of money to be spent on a library.
John contested the will and won. He still built the library, but invested considerably less money than his aunt intended. Townspeople considered him stingy. Before his death, John commissioned an artist to create a bronze statue for his grave.

Though it actually depicts a man with a cape draped around himself, the large statue on the grave is now known as Black Agnes.
The title of the statue is "Thanatos," which means "Death" in Greek. It's said that if you sit on the lap of Black Agnes, you might experience a range of horrible things, from a spurt of bad luck to death.

It's assumed that Hubbard's mean-spirited personality while he was alive has somehow carried over after his death, and is responsible for many of the strange happenings here.
