Vermont is home to intense natural beauty that consistently amazes. There is one geologic wonder in our state that is world famous and most of us don’t realize it. Lone Rock Point has been published in many textbooks over the years and you may have seen it without even realizing it. This incredible spot is a prime example of one of the phenomena that occur when the Earth’s crust shifts.
Located in Burlington on a small peninsula that juts into Lake Champlain, you'll find Lone Rock Point. What may appear to be just a bunch of massive rocks is actually much more impressive.
The rocks are an exposed thrust fault. It occurs when there is a break in the Earth's crust and older rocks are pushed on top of younger rocks. This spot is part of the Champlain Thrust a 200-mile fault that stretches from southern Quebec through Vermont and into eastern New York.
The exposed thrust fault is a prime example of this ancient geologic occurrence and has been published worldwide in science textbooks. Because the fault is so exposed it is easy to see the clear difference between the older Cambrian-aged Dunham Dolostone on top and the younger Middle-Ordovician Iberville Shale on the bottom.
This place is one of the most-visited structural geologic sites in New England. While it takes a little bit of extra effort to view this amazing feature, it's well worth it.
The thrust fault sits on the shores of Lake Champlain. You can approach by boat or hike your way there. The land is owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont and is accessible by a trail network.
