There are thousands of chapels and churches spread throughout Vermont, but none of them are anything like this one in St. Johnsbury. The Dog Chapel on Dog Mountain caters to four-legged furry friends and their owners and it’s a must-visit if you’re ever in the area.

The private mountaintop spot is 150-acres large, making it the perfect size for dogs to run around and have fun.
Dog Chapel was inspired by a vision that founder and creator, Stephen Huneck, had when he fell seriously ill.

During his recovery, Huneck thought about rituals humans perform when another person close to them passes away. Since dogs are family members, too, he thought it would be wonderful humans could have a ritual space to celebrate the life and mourn the loss of their furry four-legged friends. And hopefully, bring some closure too.
While dogs might be allowed in most chapels, this chapel welcomes all breeds with open arms.

Dog Chapel and Dog Mountain Grounds are free to visit and open every day from dawn till dusk. The Dog Gallery is open Friday from 11am – 4pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am – 5pm.
