While Vermont can be a very quiet and tranquil place where you’d think nothing could happen, unfortunately some strange things have been known to occur that simply cannot be explained. These 5 baffling stories will leave you utterly confused and in awe, unless of course, you have the missing piece (if so, speak now or forever hold your peace).
1) Bennington Triangle - Long Trail Disappearances
In a matter of 5 years from 1945 - 1950, 5 people vanished on separate occasions in the exact same part of southern Vermont surrounding Glastonbury Mountain. This area, named "The Bennington Triangle" by Joseph Citro still leaves people puzzled as to where these people went, since none were ever found. One of the dissappeared, Paul Jepson, is believed to have been abducted, as detectives made it to the middle of the trail when his scent mysteriously ended. Some claim to have sighted UFOs as well as the legendary Bigfoot in this vicinity, which makes you wonder what kind of abduction may have gone down...
2) Human skull on Hill Rd. in Danby
In February 2012, a skull was found on the side of the road in Danby. It was originally believed to have belonged to one of the several young women who had disappeared in the area over the past 20 years. Research soon determined that it in fact belonged to an Asian female, although no Asian females had ever been reported missing in that region...
*Note: picture not of the actual skull.
3) The Murder of Dean Webster
A friend found Dean in his backyard in Rochester on November 11, 2011 with a deadly gunshot wound. A neighbor has seen him alive the day before but family members weren't able to provide much other details, leaving a dead case unable to be closed.
4) The disappearance of Lynne Schulze
The Bennington College student told her friends she had to run back to her dorm to grab something right before her exam in 1971, and no one ever saw her again. A friend recalls her saying she wanted to "drop out of society" and have a fresh start, so she may have done just that. But where did she go ?
5) Champ, Lake Champlain's own Loch Ness Monster
Whether you believe this one or not, you're still left with unanswered questions at the end of the day. Legends of "Champ" the colossal-sized creature that lives in Lake Champlain existed among the Abenaki and Iroqouis people and have continued up to this very day. Over 600 people have claimed to have seen Champ, describing the the monster to be serpent-like, anywhere from 10 to 180 feet long and as having glowing eyes. Not believing me? Dinosaur bones of the basilosaurus, an extinct snake-whale animal, have been discovered in nearby Charlotte. We'll leave the mystery open there. *Note: Picture above taken by Sandra Mansi in 1977 is believed to be the ACTUAL Champ. I'll let you figure out which picture. 😉
Guess you’ll be sleeping with one eye open tonight, and not be swimming in the lake any time soon. Just kidding. Champ is quite friendly once you get to know him.
