How often do you say, “Hey, let’s go for sandwiches?” Probably not so much. But the sandwich is quite possibly the best invention ever. It’s portable, it’s customizable and, when you find a good sandwich shop, it’s delicious! Here are just 22 of the best sandwich shops I could find in the state.
These shops are all local. Some offer more than one location, but you won’t find national chains on this list — no Subway, Quiznos or Jimmy John’s here. Shops aren’t listed by ranking, but roughly from the south end of the state to the north.
1) The Lunch Box, St. George
Some of the sandwiches at The Lunch Box are so stuffed you’ll have a hard time getting your mouth around them! Try their Sweet & Spicy Pork with chipotle mayo and guacamole, or the little meatball sliders are tasty, too. This restaurant was previously owned by Tony Pantele (we’ve included his Moab sandwich shop here). Now it’s run by Gary and Becky Jones and the food is just as yummy as ever! 675 E. 2) Tom’s Deli, St. George
Family owned and operated, this little sandwich shop has a traditional menu with all the goodies: ham, roast beef, turkey, pastrami, etc. Get ‘em hot or cold in large, super or king-size. 175 W 900 South Bluff Suite 2 in St. George.
3) The Pastry Pub, Cedar City
Pastry Pub’s sandwiches are stacked high. Each includes your choice of sauce: herbal, pesto or chipotle. Choose your favorite bread, meat, cheese and veggies. You’d have to eat here for months to try all the sandwich possibilities! 86 W. Center Street in Cedar City.
4) The Little Brick House, Cedar City
The Po Boy looks delicious! Watch for live music events. 86 S. Main Street in Cedar City.
5) Forscher German Bakery and Restaurant, Orderville
Sandwiches are made with fresh-baked rolls and bread. Try the Black Forest Ham, Hot Capicola or German Bratwurst sandwich. 110 N. State Street in Orderville.
6) Pantele’s Desert Deli, Moab
You’ll find owners Eric and Belle behind the counter when you stop in for a delicious Italian hero or Center Street Veggie. You might have to wait a few minutes for your sandwich, but the wait is well worth it! 98 E. Center Street in Moab.
7) Big Daddy’s Deli, Richfield
Their sandwiches are all tasty, but the pulled pork just might be the best. The folks at Big Daddy’s are BBQ specialists. 60 W. 100 N. in Richfield.
8) Shirley’s Bakery Cafe, Provo
This adorable little shop serves delicious sandwiches, salads and soups. Good luck walking in for lunch and leaving without a frosted cookie, brownie or eclair! 1620 N. Freedom Blvd. in Provo.
9) The Italian Place: Lindon, Orem, Spanish Fork
If you’re feeling like a Greek God, but you’re hungry for an Italian sandwich, try the Zeus or the Thor. 569 North State Street in Lindon; 1086 South State Street in Orem; 749 North Main Street in Spanish Fork.
10) Sensuous Sandwich: Orem and Provo
This sandwich shop with the naughty name has delicious sandwiches, also with naughty names. Try the satisfier, the enticer, the au natural or the tantalizer. 163 West Center Street in Provo; 1680 South State Street #104 in Orem.
11) Moochie’s Meatballs and More!: Lehi, Midvale, Salt Lake City
Do people go to Moochie’s and order something other than the meatball or atomic meatball sandwiches? 380 N. 850 E. in Lehi; 7725 S. State Street in Midvale; 232 E. 800 S. in Salt Lake City.
12) Ken’s Sandwiches, Magna
A Magna classic, making and selling tasty sub sandwiches for at least 30 years. 8519 W 3100 S in Magna.
13) Granato’s: 4 locations -- 2 in Salt Lake City, Holladay, South Jordan
Granato’s has been the place Utahns go for fresh sandwiches, deli and imported food since Frank Granato opened shop in 1948. Now Frank’s son Sam runs the business, and the sandwiches are still as delicious as ever. Try the Godfather, the San Fran Kid or the Fresh Mozzarella -- all made on fresh bread. 14) Tony Caputos: Four locations in Salt Lake City
They make their own salami. So, of course you’ll try The Caputo, The Muffaletta or The Soprano. 15) Even Stevens: Downtown SLC, Sugarhouse (Draper coming soon!)
We love their slogan, "A Sandwich Shop with a Cause." Every month, Even Stevens counts the number of sandwiches sold and puts the amount of money needed to make that many sandwiches into a special bank account. Non-profit partners rally volunteers, access the account and make sandwiches for people in need. Their gourmet sandwiches are all delicious, but our favorite it the "Do-Gouda" with roast beef, smoked gouda and sweet onion marmalade. 200 South 414 East in Salt Lake City; 2030 South 900 East in Sugarhouse.
16) Bud's, Salt Lake City
Sandwich lovers looking for a vegan option will love Bud's -- every food item in the shop is plant-based. Try their Barbacoa sandwich -- you'll never know it's grilled jackfruit! 509 E. 300 S. in Salt Lake City.
17) Leger’s Deli, Park City
It’s pronounced LeGairz, but don’t let the fancy name fool you -- this sandwich shop opened in 1977 and these people don’t fool around. They cut their own meat and cheese on location, so everything is super fresh. Try the Kitchen Sink, pictured here. 1612 W. Ute Blvd., Ste. 113 in Park City.
18) Back Door Deli, Park City
This little deli has over 50 sandwiches, so they’ve pretty much got it all covered. For a unique and tasty sandwich, try the #48: "Roasted turkey, basil, goat cheese, cucumbers,spinach and herbed olive oil on a toasted sourdough baguette." 136 Heber Ave in Old Town Park City.
19) Wasatch Back Grill and Deli, Heber
This little deli has only been open a few years, but it’s already a favorite in Heber. Owner-operated. 550 W. 100 S. in Heber.
20) Cutler’s Cookies and Sandwiches: Bountiful, Centerville, Layton
You had us at "cookies," but then we saw the sandwiches made on fresh croissants. You can choose other bread, like rye, sourdough or whole wheat, too. 21) Doolittle’s Fresher Express Deli, Ogden
This cozy little deli has all the traditional faves. Add as many veggies as you want to your sandwich, free of charge. 4282 South 1650 West in Ogden.
22) Logan’s Heroes, Logan
Delicious sub sandwiches. The Chicken Cordon Bleu and Spicy Italian are local favorites. Free chips with every sandwich! 101 S. Main Street in Logan.
