While most Utahns are familiar with the Great Salt Lake, very few know that it is home to multiple islands. Antelope Island is the largest island and the most popular. It is well known for the bison that live there and its hiking and camping opportunities. However, the second largest island is still quite extraordinary but many people don’t even know it exists.
Stansbury Island is the second largest island found in the Great Salt Lake. However, this island, as well as most other islands, is actually just a giant mountain range that pokes up above the lake. Stansbury Island is located on the southwestern shore of the Great Salt Lake.
A dirt causeway actually connects this mountain range to the land; however, it is still considered an island and the perfect place to get away from the hustle of life.
We suggest driving a four-wheel drive vehicle to the island as you will travel over dirt and gravel. You must also stay on the road at all times as a portion of this island is on private land. Please be respectful of all signs and only explore designated public areas.

While very few people know about Stansbury Island, they are familiar with the pink area of the Great Salt Lake. This part of the lake turns a beautiful pink color due to the causeway on the west shore of Stansbury Island.
This pink color in the water occurs because the causeway creates a change of salinity in the lake water. This change and chemicals in the water create the unique color.
During a visit to Stansbury Island, you can spend time playing in the water or on the beach. This is also a terrific spot to capture a few photos or just admire the unique view.
For a day outdoors with beautiful views and remarkable water, plan a visit to Stansbury Island. It may just be the day trip in Utah that you are searching for.
Have you ever been to Stansbury Island? Did you see the pink lake? What was your experience like? Let us know in the comments!
If you are searching for another must-visit destination in the Great Salt Lake, you’ll definitely want to check out the Spiral Jetty located in the northeastern part of the lake.
