It is no secret that I love visiting the small towns in Utah. I grew up in small towns around the state and found them charming in every single way. While I could list many small towns in Utah to visit, there is one that is rural, small, and delightful in every way — Gunnison. This town is where you can go to enjoy a simple life. It’s a community full of friendly faces and things to do and it’s a place that always deserves a visit.
Gunnison is located in Sanpete County. It is tucked away in the Sevier Valley and approximately 3,500 people call it home.
This town has historic roots that go back to the 1950s when the town was founded. It was named in honor of Captain John W. Gunnison, who was second in command of the Stansbury Transcontinental Railroad Survey and who was killed near Sevier Lake.
Today when you visit, you’ll immediately notice the slower pace of the town. Take a walk down Main Street and enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Located right on Main Street, this restaurant is a local favorite and where you can devour delicious burgers, fries, and ice cream.
If you are willing to go for a little drive, approximately 10 miles outside of town is Palisade State Park. This state park has something for everyone including camping, hiking, and golfing.
Palisade State Park is also home to Palisade Reservoir, a beautiful place for fishing, boating, and swimming. This is the perfect day trip destination for the entire family and a great place to spend some time on the water.
Gunnison may be a small town in Utah but there’s something for everyone — history, nature, and good food. It’s a place where you can truly appreciate the simple things in life.
