Utah has a unique history, especially when compared to most other states around the country. Fortunately, you can learn stories of this state’s past at the many historic sites that dot Utah. Located in the heart of St. George is one area that’s packed with stories of long ago. It is Ancestor Square and it’s one of the best day trip destinations in southern Utah.
St. George is one of our favorite southern Utah destinations. It was established in the mid-1800s when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints asked families to move to the area to grow cotton.
Today, when you visit, you’ll find Ancestor Square nestled right in the heart of the city. This area is home to many historic buildings, as well as modern shops, restaurants, and other businesses that make for a delightful visit.
Ancestor Square is comprised of 12 separate buildings, six of these are on a historic registry. During your visit, you can see Sheriff Hardy’s House, which was built in 1877, and a former Sheriff’s office and jailhouse.
So what makes Ancestor Square unique? Well, these historic buildings have been renovated to provide a pioneer vibe but to also house all types of modern businesses.
You will find restaurants and places to eat like Hardy House Restaurant, Sunrise Donuts, and the Pizza Factory. One of my favorite stops is Bee Sweet Ice Cream, which is located in a historic sheriff’s office next to the jailhouse.
You’ll also find businesses such as jewelers, art galleries, bookshops, clothing stores, and more as you walk around.
I personally love to just walk and enjoy the beauty of the area. Not only is Ancestor Square charming, but there are plaques where you can learn more about its history.
Brigham Young would live in this home during the winter months from 1870 to 1877. It was in this home that he directed the church. Today, this home is open to tours free of charge.
Historic Ancestor Square in St. George, Utah is a wonderful place to walk among history, yet still enjoy many modern amenities. It’s a day trip destination with plenty to offer.
