With a population hovering around 90,000 residents, the historic Utah community of St. George has retained many of its charming characteristics, while providing a number of attractions and amenities the whole family will enjoy.
For years, St. George has been noted for its striking natural beauty and geographic proximity to a number of locales. The town, on the southwest corner of Utah, borders Arizona. It also is near such distinct geographic areas as the Mojave Desert, Colorado Plateau, and the Great Basin.
St. George is situated within a desert valley, about 3,000 feet below. Multiple natural sites surround the city, including the Beaver Dam Mountains to the west, the western portion of the Colorado Plateau to the east, Pine Valley Mountains to the north, and the Arizona Strip to the south.
The St. George Temple, under the auspices of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is among the notable attractions in the city. This historic venue has roots stretching back to 1877 and holds the distinction of being the church’s third oldest temple, and the first within Utah.
The Pine Valley Mountain range, which is accessible to pedestrians, is an ideal spot to gaze at natural beauty and native wildlife. Its highest point is 10,365 feet. Visiting areas are on the immediate outskirts of St. George’s city limits.
Throughout the year, the St. George Tabernacle hosts a range of special community events, including concerts. The historic building was constructed in 1876 and initially used for multiple purposes, including a site for church services and court hearings.
The Brigham Young Winter Home is a popular tourist destination in St. George. Young was an influential pioneer of the Mormon faith and served as its second president. Today, the home functions as a museum.
Dixie State University, a public higher education institution, is based within St. George. Throughout the year, Dixie State hosts a range of cultural events that are open to the broader community.
