Utah is home to the greatest snow on earth and we are proud of that fact. From mountain towns to the valleys, winter completely transforms our state. Alta is considered one of the snowiest towns in Utah and it makes for one extraordinary winter getaway. Whether you love to spend time outdoors or you just want a relaxing escape from reality, this snowy town in Utah is nothing short of magical. Just be sure to bring along your warmest winter hiking gear!
Alta is a small mining town tucked away in the Wasatch Mountain Range. In 1865, the first verified silver claim was staked in the area and the town quickly grew.
Unfortunately, the growth quickly declined due to several factors including a wildfire and avalanches. However, in the early 1900s, more minerals were found and a second mining boom occurred, spurring growth once again.
Although, today, Alta isn't quite known for its mining.
In 1937, 1,800 acres were deeded to the U.S. Forest Service to develop a ski area. Since that time, Alta has become a prime skiing destination in the Beehive State.

And, it is no surprise that Alta is a must-visit ski town in Utah as it averages more than 500 inches of snow each year!
Alta Ski Area is the perfect place to spend a snowy day in Utah. This ski resort features more than 2,614 skiable acres and multiple runs for every skill level.
However, you don't have to visit the ski resort for a getaway to this snowy town. You can also strap on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and enjoy some time exploring the surrounding area.
Albion Basin Road, for example, is a popular place on a snowy day. In the winter, this road is closed, creating the perfect location for a day outdoors.
You can also just relax with a massage or another wellness service at the Snowpine Lodge. This is one destination in Alta where you will look and feel your best when visiting.
And, if you want a cozy place to relax, you can always stay at one of the lodges in the ski resort or enjoy some solitude in a vacation rental. There are dozens of options to choose from in the surrounding area including the beautiful Creekside cabin.
This 2,943-square-foot cabin can sleep up to eight adults, features cozy seating areas with a fireplace, a private hot tub, and mountain views that are enchanting in every way.
