There are trails in Utah that aren’t for the faint of heart. These trails not only provide a challenge physically, but mentally as well. However, each and every one provides some type of reward and the Houndstooth Trail in the Twin Peaks Wilderness is no exception. This rugged and remote trail is short — only 3.6 miles — but it’s not easy. Your climb will be steep and the trail may be rocky, but the views are extraordinary. If you are up for the challenge, this is one hike I strongly recommend you place on your bucket list.
The Houndstooth Trail is located in the Twin Peaks Wilderness near Salt Lake City. You will find the trailhead off Wasatch Boulevard just south of the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.
This trail is only 3.6 miles, so it’s quite short but this may be one of the toughest hiking trails in Utah. In a short distance, you will climb more than 2,800 feet in elevation, meaning this trek is steep — seriously steep.
Proper preparation is an absolute must on this trail. You will need to bring plenty of water and wear excellent hiking shoes and socks. The trail is not only steep but it is rocky and loose, making the already-difficult terrain even more of a challenge.

Although, if you are willing to take on the challenge, the views are going to reward you throughout your entire adventure. You’ll climb through forested areas …
This is one trail where it is important you give yourself plenty of time to tackle the trail. Never rush on this hike to ensure you stay safe and enjoy the views. Keep your eyes out for rattlesnakes during the summer months and pay attention to weather reports before heading on the trail.
