Do you remember drive-in movies from your childhood? You’d pile into the family car and head to the theater, then snuggle in with your blanket and pillow to watch the kids’ movie…and you’d likely be fast asleep by the time the second movie started. Many of Utah’s drive-in theaters have closed over the years, but there’s still a large drive-in open here in the Beehive State, and it also offers fun family entertainment during the day.
If you grew up in the Salt Lake Valley, you might remember Redwood Drive-In from your childhood. This family drive-in opened in 1948, and it's one of the few drive-in theaters that's still open.
For the best selection, you'll want to arrive early for the swap meet, which is held every Saturday and Sunday. In the summer, it opens to the public at 7 a.m, in the winter, it starts at 9 a.m. Admission to the swap meet is just 50 cents on Saturday, and $1 on Sunday.
You'll find more than 300 vendors here. Small business owners operate many of the booths, but individuals and families often rent one-day spaces, too. It's the biggest yard sale you'll find on a weekend!
Walk the perimeter for more permanent, indoor booths. These booths are open during the winter, as well as summer months. You'll find all kinds of products, from makeup to cooking pots to billiard equipment. In the middle spaces, you'll find smaller vendors and individuals offering yard-sale items.
During summer months, as the sun begins to set, you'll want to head to Redwood Drive-In for a movie. The theater shows all kinds of movies, suitable for date night or family night.
Movie admission is $9 per adult; $1 for kids ages 4-9. Drive in and choose a spot, then set up lawn chairs, snuggle into blankets, and get comfortable. The state-of-the-art projection system and FM broadcast system make the experience even better.
Movie start back up on April 26th and will run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Starting on May 24th, movies will run seven days a week!
Visit Redwood Drive-In Theatre and Swap Meet’s website for more information about both the swap meet and the summer movies, and follow on Facebook so you can see the movies offered.
If you live in the southern part of the Beehive State, you’ll want to make plans now to visit this incredible pool.
